Photorejuvenation is the process of restoring or rejuvenating a skin condition with laser light energy.
Age and sun damage on the skin manifests in 3 main ways, the appearance of visible and broken capillaries, increased or irregular pigmentation (hyperpigmentation), and the loss of collagen that supports the skin with the formation of wrinkles.
Rejuvenation of the skin of the face, neck, chest, arms and hands is possible by using the BBL (broad band light) Systems of laser therapy. This special laser light is scanned across the area being treated, reducing or removing these signs of damage, leaving the skin looking clearer, smoother and healthier.
All laser and BBL systems work by specifically targeting undesirable features to remove them. This is done by a process called “selective Photothermolysis”, which means using selected wavelengths of laser light that will target damage and selectively remove it.
For example, to remove red capillaries selectively without affecting other structures in the skin you need to select a wavelength of light that is best absorbed by red only (the colour of your target, the capillaries). Similarly, to remove abnormal skin pigmentation another wavelength of light is selected that is best absorbed by dark colour only (the colour of your target, abnormal skin pigmentation) so that when it is applied to the skin surface will be selectively absorbed by this alone to remove it while leaving other skin structures unaffected. This is why it is called “selective photothermolysis” (‘photo” – light, “thermo” – by heating, “lysis” – removal).
Laser and BBL systems can also be used to stimulate (rather than remove) and there are, for example, some wavelengths of light that can be used to stimulate the fibroblast cells (the cells that produce collagen and elastin) in the skin, enhancing the amount of collagen and elastin there. By using these concepts in photorejuvenation technology, it is possible to select three wavelengths of light (one for capillary removal, one for pigment removal, and one for collagen stimulation) to be applied to the skin simultaneously to achieve these desired results together. Since this reduces or removes the sun and age changes seen on the skin it can be correctly described as a rejuvenation treatment of the skin by BBL laser.
A wider range of unsightly conditions can be treated with photorejuvenation therapy:
If properly cared for with sensible sun protection and the use of special creams at home the results will be long lasting and should improve further with time. Top-up treatments at intervals to be determined for your individual need would be beneficial.
