What procedures are available to improve or enhance my lips?

These can be broken down to three main groups –

The injection of LIP FILLERS to increase volume, improve shape and to improve lip lines

The injection of MUSCLE RELAXANTS to reduce lip wrinkles and lines and to create a LIP FLIP

Minor SURGICAL procedures called LIP LIFT and CORNER LIP LIFT for a permanent lip rejuvenation.

While LIP FILLERS are by far one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic medicine the world over LIP FLIPS and LIFTS are two alternative procedures that are becoming increasingly popular options as they address issues that may not be addressed sufficiently by fillers alone.

What is a lip flip procedure?

This is a simple procedure involving the injection of botulinum injections (wrinkle smoothing injections) into the orbicularis muscle of the top lip. This muscle flattens the upper lip on smiling, so by relaxing the muscle you encourage the top lip to lift and flip outwards giving the appearance of a fuller lip with more pink (vermillion) showing.

The same muscle is also used to pout and pucker the lips and may create the vertical lip lines known as “smokers’ lines” over time. By relaxing this muscle in addition to the lip flip you also get reduction of these lines with smoothing of both the top and bottom lips.

Am I a candidate?

If you are looking for a non-invasive simple procedure and you have vertical lip lines to reduce, or just looking to lift and ‘flip’ your top lip to expose more of the pink mucosa without the fullness of fillers then this is a very good option.

If you need to add volume to the lips then fillers will be required as well.

How is it carried out?

Botulinum injections are given into the orbicularis muscle of the lip. It is a quick and straight-forward procedure with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

What are the advantages?

Quick, simple non-invasive procedure to lift and flip the top lip with no downtime, negligible discomfort and avoids the “full” appearance of fillers.

Disadvantages?

Possible asymmetry and difficulty with puckering actions such as sucking through a straw and whistling, but this is minimal with experienced practitioners, and if it does occur it should settle within a week or two.

Cost?

Price varies according to the number of units of botulinum used and may range from $90 - $150 in most cases.
